The ReSAKSS Data Challenge was presented on Thursday, May 09th, 2019 to high school students from Lycée d’Excellence Privé Birago Diop and agribusiness students from Institut Supérieur de Management (ISM), School of Management.
Lycée d’Excellence Privé Birago Diop is a secondary school owned by ISM School of Management Group based in point E, Dakar. As part of the ISM network of 6 high schools of excellence in Senegal, Lycée d’Excellence Privé Birago Diop follows a Senegalese academic program and aims to equip its students with key knowledge and high-level analytical skills for their personal development. Likewise, l’École de Management is also part of the ISM Group, which teaches college-level courses, through innovative training thus providing for total immersion of its students in the professional world. This college course will enable them to acquire technical skills and methods while being trained in management, marketing, and finance to contribute to the proper functioning of agricultural or agri-food companies and structures.
More than 60 students were present at the event, during which IFPRI communication specialists and developers presented IFPRI, its mission, as well as one of its regional flagship programs, known as ReSAKSS. Firsthand, the students were introduced to ReSAKSS ‘specific scope of work to better understand the CAADP framework and discover the wide range of tools and resources provided by the ReSAKSS website. The introduction to ReSAKSS was followed by a thorough presentation of the ReSAKSS website and the eAtlas tool, which gave students a better understanding of the use these platforms and methods to extract data and participate in the ReSAKSS Data Challenge.
The presentation of the ReSAKSS Data Challenge detailed the objective of the competition, the categories, prizes to win, the calendar and the application process. This brought about interesting and in-depth questions from some very smart high school students, regarding the reliability of the data and role and responsibilities of governments in providing accurate data.
The event ended with the students expressing their motivation to participate in this year’s edition of the RESAKSS Data Challenge and already forming working groups, to enter the competition.
This presentation is part of a series dedicated to university and high school students to promote the second edition of the challenge. The objective is to encourage enthusiastic data users to showcase their creativity and analytical skills using data and other resources on the ReSAKSS website to develop an innovative knowledge product or project that addresses a development challenge faced by Africa.
