IFPRI’s presence in Ethiopia serves two main purposes: supporting inclusive and sustainable growth and transformation in Ethiopia through the Ethiopia Strategy Support Program (ESSP); and providing a hub for research and capacity strengthening activities in the eastern and southern Africa region.

ESSP is a collaborative program undertaken by IFPRI and the Policy Studies Institute (PSI). The program works closely with local partners to assure that relevant research evidence is available for improved decision making and that local capacity is gradually formed so that the increasingly complex questions in Ethiopia can be tackled in a meaningful way by the relevant government institutions and other concerned local partners in the country.

The activities in the regional hub focus on building evidence, tools, and capacities on climate change and resilience, trade and economic integration, and nutrition and health, working in close collaboration with various government and non-government organizations in the countries as well as with the regional economic communities, regional networks, and donors and nongovernmental organizations operating at the regional level.
